Space Battleship Yamato 2205: A New Journey (宇宙戦艦ヤマト2205 新たなる旅立ち, Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2205: Ataranaru Tabidachi) also known as Star Blazers 2205 is a 2021-2022 episodic anime series and film duology and the direct sequel to Space Battleship Yamato 2202:Warriors of Love.

The first movie, with the subtitle Opening Chapter: Takeoff (前章 —TAKEOFF—, Zenshō Teikuofu). was released in Japanese theaters on October 8, 2021^[3]. While the second with the subtitle Closing Chapter: Stasha (後章 —STASHA—, Kōshō Sutasha) was released in Japanese theaters on February 4, 2022.

The story is an adaptation of the 1979 television movie Yamato: The New Voyage^[4]

Three years after the conclusion of the war with Gatlantis, Desler has discovered the world of Garmann, whose conditions are an exact match with Garmillas and its natives are identical to Gamilans, suggesting Garmann is their original homeworld. Dessler overthrows the Bolar Federation's tyrannical rule over the planet and begins the process of transferring the population of Garmillas to Garmann. However, an unknown force destroys Garmillas in the middle of the evacuation process and warps the entire planet of Iscandar away.

Meanwhile, Earth has rebuilt the Yamato with Susumu Kodai as its captain. The Yamato also leads its own fleet now, with the support ship Asuka commanded by Yuki Mori and the carrier Hyuga commanded by Shiro Sanada. With much of the crews of all three ships composed of fresh recruits, the fleet heads out on a six month training mission and diplomatic visit to Garmillas. However, upon hearing of the destruction of Garmillas and disappearance of Iscandar, Kodai disobeys orders from HQ and heads over to save the refugees trapped on the planet. The series also features young cadet Ryusuke Domon, a recruit who sneaked aboard Yamato with a grudge against Kodai.

Behind the scenes[]

The film was first announced on March 29, 2019 by Fukui himself and series former director Nobuyoshi Habara alongside Daisuke Ono^[4].

Fukui revealed the title of the film following the Yamato concert event on January 10, 2020, alongside the compilation film detailing the events of Yamato 2202, The Era of Space Battleship Yamato: Choice of 2202 ^[1]. The official website for Yamato 2202 was later updated regarding the upcoming film, revealing new staff to take the helm in the film's production. Kenji Yasuda replaced Nobuyishi Habara as director while returning staff from the previous movie were brought in with Hideki Oka for the scripts, Akira Miyagawa for the music and Junichirō Tamamori, Yasuchi Ishizu and Mika Akitaka were brought in for both ship designs and mechanical designs^[5].

On June 11, 2021, it was announced that the films would be a duology set after the events of 2202 and a remake of the 1979 film Space Battleship Yamato: The New Voyage^[6]. Alongside the first film's subtitle and its release date of October 8, 2021, info on the returning cast to reprise their roles in the film as well as introducing new characters and ship designs was also revealed^[7].

After the first film's premiere, it was announced that the second part of the film series would have a release date of February 4, 2022^[2].

Sequel[]

At the end of the very last scene of the second movie, Be Forever Yamato: REBEL 3199 (Yamato yo Towa ni: Rebel 3199) was announced. The project was later confirmed by series composition writer Harutoshi Fukui during the Online YamaTalk treamed on Bandai Namco Arts' official YouTube channel on February 10 2022^[8]. The instalment will be a 26 episode long television series and the story will start in 2207.
